How to know that you have violations on your property in NYC?
On your computer access the Buildings Information System. Look at Property Profile Overview for the number of open violations. You can see some detailed information. If detailed information is not available, you may request copies. The processing fee is $8.00 per copy for each violation; each additional duplicate copy of a violation is $5.00. You may also file a Freedom of Information Law request through NYC OpenRecords. #nycdobviolations
Class of Violation removal or dismissal process.
Violations can be challenged in a variety of ways before admitting to guilt. Talk to a professional before pleading. But know that some violations carry daily penalties so don’t wait too long.
Depending on the type of violation cited, an owner has a certain amount of time to rectify it:
- 90 days for Class A (Non-hazardous)
- 30 days for Class B (Hazardous)
- 21 days for Class C – Window guards or lead-based paint
- Immediately for Class C – Heat and hot water
- Within 24 hours for Class C – Everything else
If you feel not comfortable to remove violation by Yourself – hire an expeditor.
