Con Edison and National Grid (providers of natural gas in many NYC areas) recommend that natural gas meters be installed on the outside?
Natural gas piping can leak near the meters and therefore, to reduce the possibility of an explosion at the interior of a building, these meters are recommended to be installed on the outside.
Because natural gas is odorless, a chemical is added to it so that it can be identified by smell when it leaks. So if you smell rotten eggs, it may be a gas leak; call 911 from outside the building
